Distinguished and Famous people from Parramatta
🛡️ Pemulwuy
Pemulwuy led Aboriginal resistance to colonial occupation around Sydney, including a confrontation at Parramatta in 1797. Seriously wounded there, he survived and escaped, continuing resistance until his death in 1802. The National Museum places these events within conflict over land, resources and the violence accompanying settlement. The Parramatta confrontation was one episode in a wider struggle over Country. Remembering him alongside colonial officials and landowners changes the perspective of the district’s history, keeping the defence of Aboriginal Country visible within accounts of the growing settlement.
🏃 Betty Cuthbert
Betty Cuthbert grew up at Ermington and became one of the stars of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, winning the hundred metres, two hundred metres and sprint relay. Parramatta granted her the Freedom of the City that December. After an interrupted career and a temporary retirement, she returned to win the four hundred metres at Tokyo in 1964. Before Melbourne she had bought spectator tickets, doubting she would make the team: the eventual change of seating arrangement worked out rather well. Ermington commemorates her through Betty Cuthbert Avenue, connecting the medals with the neighbourhood of her youth.
🌾 Elizabeth Macarthur
Elizabeth Macarthur made Elizabeth Farm near Parramatta her home after arriving in New South Wales in 1790. During John Macarthur’s absences she took substantial responsibility for livestock, property and family affairs. Her letters preserve observations of colonial society alongside the demands of managing an enterprise. The surviving house helps make that work tangible. Its history also includes convict labour and Aboriginal dispossession, which belong within any account of the farm’s prosperity. Elizabeth’s practical contribution gives a fuller picture of a venture too often attached to one man’s name.
🏬 Nicholas “Nick” Aboud
Businessman and Lebanese community leader Nicholas “Nick” Aboud was educated at The King’s School, Parramatta. His subsequent training took him to Beirut and to linen and cotton mills in Britain before he returned to Sydney’s family textile business. Retail leadership followed, including Buckinghams department store and Angus and Robertson bookshops. In the latter role, he helped turn a loss-making operation into a successful business. Aboud also supported Lebanese cultural and community organisations. His Parramatta association is schooling, an early chapter before a career that moved between manufacturing, retailing and community leadership.
📖 Joyce Irene Ackroyd
Japanese-language scholar Joyce Irene Ackroyd attended Parramatta High School, following earlier education at Newcastle. Her determination to study Japanese had survived an early obstacle: a teacher’s scholarship would not fund the subject because it was not considered sufficiently useful in secondary schools. She studied it alongside her teaching work and developed a distinguished academic career. Later, as foundation professor at the University of Queensland, she helped expand Japanese-language education, including classes in Queensland schools. An interest initially treated as impractical became the centre of her contribution to Australian learning.
